Couples Counseling

Relationships are not easy. Unfortunately for many of us, our relationships have become distant, disconnected and a place of conflict, leaving us with unmet needs and just feeling “stuck.” We often don’t feel safe asking for what we need, and maybe don’t even know what we need ourselves. Here at Cultivate Growth Counseling, it is our goal to provide you and your partner with a safe space, where you can start to feel safe enough to explore and discover growth and intimacy in your relationship. It is in this space that we will help you and your partner become more curious and open – to each other, and even to your own thoughts and emotions. Rather than focusing on assigning blame, instead we will work together and learn ways of communicating more openly so that we can repair past hurts and grow towards a healthier, more connected relationship in the future.

Our approach to couples counseling is informed by the Gottman Method.  This approach helps couples learn how to manage conflict in a way that is healthy and respectful, increase friendship and intimacy, and gain greater understanding and empathy so that each person feels seen, heard and deeply cared for within the relationship.

EMDR for Trauma

Trauma can be defined as any distressing event that overwhelms your body and brain’s ability to cope. While our brains have natural ways to process and heal from distressing events, sometimes these experiences don’t heal, leave us feeling helpless, hopeless or with a negative belief about ourselves or the world. Working through these experiences can be challenging, which is why we will work with you in a collaborative way to ensure you feel a sense of safety within the counseling relationship and you have a voice in determining the best way to engage with and heal from your past.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a clinically researched method for treating trauma, anxiety, depression, and other distressing events in our lives.  While our brains have a natural way of processing and healing from traumatic events, there are some experiences that, for whatever reason, do not get fully processed in our bodies and brains.  This may result in difficult thoughts, emotions and images which can be overwhelming.  EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation (eye movement or other forms) to help the brain process those distressing memories and allow for healing to take place.
